A man who notices.
A quietly observant engineer, runner, husband, father, and unpublished poet. David has spent his life gathering small pieces of the world in the pages of his notebooks.
Some lives are measured in milestones. Others are found in the moments in between.
From the Iowa of the 1970s to a world transformed fifty years later, one man’s notebooks hold a lifetime of love, family, poetry, and things worth remembering.
Book Two of Three
“What follows is not the story of a great man. It is the story of what a life is made of…”From the prologue · A Hayfield in Illinois
David Cole is an environmental engineer from small-town Iowa. He solves practical problems, pays attention to the natural world, and has written privately in notebooks since 1974. He is also a poet, though almost no one has ever read his work.
As he builds a life with Claire Hartley, the years bring marriage, children, work, joy, uncertainty, and change. All the while, David keeps noticing the details that might otherwise slip away: a conversation, a leaf, a quiet afternoon, the words someone almost didn't say.
Time Enough is a work of fiction about the passing of time, the people who fill it, and the question that grows more important with every year: what, in the end, makes a life?
New fictional characters from the same generation introduced in Who We Are, whose lives unfold against the decades they shared.
A quietly observant engineer, runner, husband, father, and unpublished poet. David has spent his life gathering small pieces of the world in the pages of his notebooks.
Intelligent, perceptive, and rooted in the world of books, Claire shares the long journey of family and marriage with David—often seeing the man behind the notebooks more clearly than he sees himself.
From young adulthood to the questions that come with growing older, the story moves through the years we remember—and the ones we almost forget.
On April 8, 2024, David Cole stands in a southern Illinois field with his granddaughter as the sky goes dark. The experience reveals something his decades of careful observation never quite prepared him for.
“Somewhere in the middle of that field a man of seventy-four was holding the hand of a nine-year-old girl.”
Different characters. The same generation. A new way of looking at time.
In Who We Are | It's About Time, a boy and girl represent the Baby Boom generation. Time Enough introduces David Cole and Claire Hartley—new fictional characters whose lives unfold during those same decades.
You can discover David and Claire's story on its own, or come to it after the broad generational portrait in Book One.
